Frequency effects in language acquisition, language use, and diachronic change

چکیده

Recent work in psychology and linguistics has shown that frequency of occurrence is an important determinant of language acquisition, language use, and diachronic change. This paper surveys the effects of frequency on the use and development of language and considers the psychological mechanisms that underlie the various frequency effects. The paper shows that frequency has an impact on the emergence of linguistic structure and that some well-known cross-linguistic tendencies arise from frequency effects. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The use of microgenetic method in SLA research

Microgenetic  method  is  a  specific  method  for  studying  change  in  abilities,  knowledge,  and understanding  during  short  time  spans,  through  dense  observations,  and  over  a  relatively  long period of time. In this paper I will attempt to provide a brief overview of microgenetic method and will point out its potential advantages and disadvantages in the context of second langua...

Assessing frequency changes in multistage diachronic corpora: Applications for historical corpus linguistics and the study of language acquisition

The use of corpora that are divided into temporally ordered stages is becoming increasingly wide-spread in historical corpus linguistics. This development is partly due to the fact that more and more resources of this kind are being developed. Since the assessment of frequency changes over multiple periods of time is a relatively recent practice, there are few agreed-upon standards of how such ...

How discourse context shapes the lexicon: Explaining the distribution of Spanish f- / h- words

Using a corpus of Medieval Spanish text, we examine factors affecting the Modern Standard Spanish outcome of the initial /f/ in Latin FV-words. Regression analyses reveal that the frequency of a word's use in extralexical phonetic reducing environments and lexical stress patterns significantly predict the modern distribution of f-([f]) and h-(Ø) in the Spanish lexicon of FV-words. Quantificatio...

Predictors of lexical stability in an artificially learnt language

Lexical items in the vocabulary of a language undergo dramatic changes over time, explaining the mechanisms that cause this change has been an important topic for the cognitive sciences. One particular focus for researchers has been understanding the dynamics of change in word forms. The rate (or half-life) at which word forms change over time varies greatly, and corpus-based cladistic studies ...

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Explicit and Implicit Form-Focused Instruction on Explicit and Implicit Knowledge of EFL Learners

Although explicit and implicit knowledge of language learners are essential to theoretical and pedagogical debates in second language acquisition (SLA), little research has addressed the effects of instructional interventions on the two knowledge types (R. Ellis, 2005).This study examined the relative effectiveness of explicit and implicit types of form-focused instruction (FFI) on the acquisit...
